Budget Meals for Fall

$100 a week for five people

This budget recipe plan is designed for a family of five living mainly on food stamps. You should be able to get all the food needed for this plan for about $100 a week, shopping at Walmart or discount grocery stores, or even at regular grocery stores. This budget won't stretch to organic or farmer's market food unless your local farmer's market has a special program for food stamp recipients. But this plan does allow for at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, and a lot of whole grains, and some fish. There is very little meat, but the kids get milk with every meal, and with their snacks too.

Breakfast

Once the kids are back in school, and can get their breakfast there, it's not as hard to manage a nice breakfast. Hot oatmeal will be more attractive as it gets colder, and now is the season to bake diced apples with your oatmeal in the microwave.

Lunch

Home made bread spread with your own hummus or baba ganoush makes a great lunch this time of year; also thyme bread. Enjoy the new fresh apples with your bread. A lot of your lunches should be leftovers from dinner, though.

On Sunday it's nice to have a hot lunch of bread pudding with sliced melon or applesauce.

Snack

For an afternoon snack, in the fall popcorn can't be beat. But slices of apple with hummus are also a great afternoon snack, or slices of sweet potato pie or apple crisp.

Dinner

Each of these dinners corresponds to a recipe here on Gevirts. All but the stuffed zucchini can be made in an hour, and most of them take only half an hour. If you don't get home from work until 6, this will mean that you don't eat until 7 or 7:30, but that will work out fine for you.
